Solution Architect  ·  Commerce & Integration

Catalin Chelariu

I design and validate the architecture behind a European pharmacy retailer's e-commerce estate — the storefront, the integration layer and the systems of record underneath it — and I still write code when a design needs proving.

Remit

What I am accountable for

Solution design
Target architectures, solution outline designs and decision records written to survive contact with delivery — and revisited when they don't.
Boundaries & contracts
Where responsibility sits between commerce, loyalty, pricing, search and content — and what contract each boundary needs before anyone builds against it.
Feasibility & estimation
Validating proposed solutions against the landscape that already exists, and giving stakeholders numbers they can plan a quarter around.
Regulated delivery
Consent, data privacy and change control treated as design inputs. In a pharmacy estate they shape the architecture; they are not paperwork added at the end.

Current work

A digital offers & loyalty programme

Most of my time goes to one programme: bringing customer offers and loyalty together across a pharmacy retail estate. It touches loyalty, trading, pricing and content teams at once, which means the hard part is rarely a single component — it is holding one coherent picture while four groups describe the same thing in four vocabularies.

In practice that looks like consolidating stakeholder input, reconciling it against the solution outline design, and keeping the unresolved items visible and owned rather than quietly assumed — identifier mapping between systems, the taxonomy offers get filtered by, and which scope honestly belongs in a second phase instead of this one.

Indicative platform architecture across three layers An experience layer of storefront, content delivery and offers interface sits over an integration layer of API gateway, event bus and orchestration services, which sits over systems of record for commerce, loyalty, search and pricing, with cloud platform and compliance concerns cutting across all three. EXPERIENCE LAYER Storefront PWA Kit · React · Node Content delivery headless CMS Offers & loyalty UI current programme INTEGRATION LAYER API gateway MuleSoft Event bus Kafka · publish / subscribe Orchestration Node services SYSTEMS OF RECORD Commerce SFCC CRM & loyalty Salesforce Core Search Algolia Pricing promotions engine CROSS- CUTTING Azure & managed runtime multi-environment CI/CD · consent & data privacy · change control · observability
Indicative view of the layers I work across, not a client deliverable. Client-specific components, naming and topology omitted.

Track record

Selected work

Present

Offers & loyalty architecture

European pharmacy retail · Solution Architect

Architecture across loyalty, trading, pricing and content teams: reconciling stakeholder requirements against the solution outline design, tracking scope and open decisions in one place, and sequencing the work so delivery teams can build against something stable.

2023 — 26

Cross-team solution validation

Lead engineer · multi-team programme

Worked alongside architects and business stakeholders on proposals: options, estimates, and the unglamorous check that what was being promised would actually integrate with the platform already in production — and with the organisation's own engineering standards.

2022 — 23

Decoupling site navigation from a legacy CMS

React · Node microservices · edge routing

Led a team that lifted navigation out of a CMS-rendered site: microservices bridging authored content into React components, edge routing updated so new pages resolved correctly, and a deliberate cull of legacy scripts and asset handling that made the experience measurably more responsive.

2021 — 22

Marketing consent management

React · Node · Kafka event bus

A component that let customers manage consent by type, backed by event-driven services publishing to an external platform, plus migration jobs that moved existing consents and topics off the legacy system without a gap in compliance.

2019 — 21

Purchase journeys & knowledge-based authentication

React · Node orchestration · Java · Azure

Custom journeys for treatment services, and an authentication flow spanning several operational domains: a reusable front end over a Node orchestration layer, with the business rules held in a Java service so identity logic stayed in one place.

2018 — 19

Crop-health monitoring interface

Agritech start-up · Ember.js

An interface that turned ground-sensor readings and satellite imagery into something farmers and agronomists could read at a glance and act on the same day.

2017 — 18

Enterprise web applications through a cloud migration

Global energy sector · distributed team

Features and ordering-process work for applications moving onto a cloud platform, aligning requirements with backend, middleware and management functions spread across three continents.

2014 — 17

Product engineering from the ground up

Procurement software · ExtJS · AngularJS

Several applications built from scratch — a web shop, an invoicing application, and a form builder reused wherever other products needed forms — along with the test and build tooling around them.

Method

How the work actually gets done

Artefacts
Solution outline designs, architecture decision records, layer and sequence diagrams, and scope workbooks that track every open item to a named owner.
Disagreement in writing
Most architecture problems surface first as two teams describing one thing differently. I consolidate the notes, reconcile them against the design, and put the conflict somewhere it can be decided instead of absorbed.
Still hands-on
I review and write React and Node, and tests that assert behaviour rather than the presence of markup. A design I cannot prototype is a design I don't fully trust.

Background

Before the architecture

My degree is in communication and public relations, from Transilvania University of Braşov. I came to engineering sideways, through a front-end internship, and I have stopped treating that as a gap on the CV: a large part of this role is getting four teams to agree on what a word means.
